A combi boiler (or combination boiler) is the most commonly used boiler in the UK as it provides heat for both the central heating system and the hot water system on demand... as and when you need it.
Combi boilers take water directly from the mains water system and heat it instantly, providing effective water heating in an economical way as it only heats water when you need it. Unlike other type of boilers, combination boilers have all the components fitted within the single unit, making it a compact, neat and tidy option, which is great for people in smaller properties. The instant water heating, in turn, eliminates the need for an external water cylinder and storage tank (which is usually stored in the loft) and therefore saves ample room in your house and/or loft space! If you’re thinking of investing in a new boiler, there are, of course, some pros and cons of every type of boiler. Below, we have laid out the pros and cons of combi boilers:
• You can get hot water instantly, rather than having to wait for a tank to fill and heat up • The boiler contains all the components within the boiler unit so is more compact than most other types of boilers • There is no need for an external water cylinder or storage tank in the loft, further saving on space.
• A combination boiler is not ideal for a household where there are multiple people who might want to use hot water simultaneously. A combi boiler is ideal for providing hot water from one source at a time.
A combi boiler is an ideal choice for small to medium households with one bathroom as it provides effective hot water and heating instantly, but, as mentioned, a combi boiler is not ideal for households where hot water is needed from multiple sources simultaneously. For instance, if someone is in the shower or running a bath, someone else would struggle to do the washing up with hot water at the same time.
